Crisis Intervention Training

Crisis Intervention Training

City implementation partner: New York City Police Department

Taught by Police Academy instructors and mental health experts, Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) helps NYPD officers better recognize and respond to the behaviors and symptoms of emotional distress and mental illness. The training includes role-playing, lectures, and conversations with individuals with mental illness who have had both positive and negative encounters with the police. The four-day training aims to increase officers’ skills in de-escalation of crises and improve the safety of both the officer and the individuals encountered.
