While our City stays home to stop the spread of coronavirus, New Yorkers can access a range of mental health services by phone or online. If you or someone you care about needs support, we encourage you to reach out to the programs below. Help is available. Check back often for updates.

Accessing Mental Health Support

Cost: Many mental health programs listed below are free to New Yorkers, regardless of insurance coverage or immigration status.  For programs with costs, New York State has issued an emergency regulation requiring insurance companies to waive deductibles, copayments (copays), or coinsurance for in-network telehealth visits, including mental health services. High-quality, low-cost and no-cost mental health services are also guaranteed for NYC Care members. New Yorkers who do not qualify for or cannot afford health insurance can click here to enroll in NYCCare.nyc or call 646-NYC-Care (646-692-2273).

Internet access: New Yorkers can access many mental health resources online during the COVID-19 outbreak. Visit this page to find free WiFi access locations, from Altice and Charter, providers that have opened their Wi-Fi hotspots to all users, not only subscribers.

Coping and Mental Well-Being During the COVID-19 Outbreak

An infectious illness outbreak such as COVID-19 can be stressful to you, your loved ones and your friends. It is natural to feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious and afraid. You may also experience other symptoms of distress, such as trouble sleeping.

To reduce your stress and help manage the situation, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recommends that you:

Try to remain positive.

Remind yourself of your strengths.

Connect with friends and loved ones:

Go outside and get exercise, if you are not sick. Remember to practice good hygiene and physical distancing. Walking, running and bicycling are healthy activities that do not require close contact with others or shared equipment.

Identify what you are feeling and use healthy coping skills:

Recognize feelings of loss are normal and there are ways to cope:

Visit NYC Well’s website, which offers a number of well-being and emotional support applications that can help you cope. If your symptoms of stress become overwhelming, reach out for support and help. You can contact NYC Well, a confidential helpline for mental health and substance misuse services. Trained counselors can provide you with support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in over 200 languages.   • Crisis counseling

  • Short-term counseling

Call the New York State’s COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline at 844-863-9314 to talk to specially trained volunteer professionals. They are available to listen, support and offer referrals from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Mental Health Resources for Aging New Yorkers

If you feel lonely or isolated or have questions about mental health services you currently receive through the NYC Department for the Aging, call the Aging Connect hotline: call 212-AGING-NYC (212-244-6469). The Aging Connect hotline also provides information for caregivers.

Mental Health Resources for Veterans

If you are a veteran living in New York, or New Jersey, you can get trauma counseling and crisis intervention support. Call 311 to get connected to these services; in an emergency, call 911. Veterans can also access mental health support by calling the Veterans Crisis Line: 800-273-8255.

Mental Health Resources for Students and Young People 

Mental health support and resources are available for all students and families during the COVID-19 crisis, from the Department of Education.

The School Mental Health Program is working with its community providers to offer tele-health services, which use health insurance, Medicaid, or offer a sliding scale for billing. If you need help obtaining support for your student, please reach out to your school’s Parent Coordinator, Guidance Counselor, or School Social Worker. You can also contact any of the community-based organizations listed on the Department of Education’s guide to Mental Health Telehealth Contacts for COVID-19. For help identifying the right questions to ask, or talking to school staff, visit the Children’s Health Resource and Training Center.

To get mental health help immediately, students and their families should contact NYC Well: text “WELL” to 65173, call 1-888-NYC-WELL (692-9355), or chat now.

Additionally, all students and families can access remote social emotional learning tools for all age groups from the NYC Department of Education. To support remote learning for students, the DOE is lending internet-enabled iPads. If you did not already get one for your NYC student, fill out the Request Form.

In order to successfully fight COVID-19, our first responders, health care providers, transit workers, and other key personnel must be able to come to work. Children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for in Regional Enrichment Centers, which offer three daily hot meals, remote learning time with teachers, activities like art, music, and physical education, and social and emotional support. Information on Regional Enrichment Centers is available here.

The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development is continuing to provide services, including mental health support, for young people in Runaway and Homeless Youth Residences and Drop-In Centers. FOOD ASSISTANCE

Visit FoodHelp NYC for a map of free food resources across the city, including food pantries and Grab & Go meals at NYC Schools, available for all children or adults in need

If you cannot go out to get food, no one can bring you food, and you are not able to use private delivery options, New York City will deliver emergency meals to you in the coming days. Visit NYC Food Delivery Assistance to check your eligibility and sign up.

Taxi and Limousine Commission-licensed drivers can sign up here to deliver food to those most in need during the COVID-19 crisis.


SUBSTANCE MISUSE CONCERNS

New York State has enacted a law providing benefits to workers impacted by mandatory or precautionary orders of quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19. If your employer doesn’t comply with this law, you have the right to file a complaint.

All eviction proceedings in New York City are suspended indefinitely. For more information, visit the NYC Department of Investigation (DOI).
